SIFE group to honor women in business during

special event

PLAINVIEW – The Students in Free Enterprise team at Wayland Baptist University will honor female entrepreneurs and others in the workforce with a special “Women in Business” event.

Slated Aug. 24, the day will begin with a noon luncheon at the Plainview Country Club for interested women, featuring a round-table discussion of topics of interest to women in the business world. Information from the Small Business Administration on entrepreneurship will be available as well. A $5 donation is suggested to offset the cost of the meal, and an RSVP is encouraged by Aug. 21.

The celebration of women culminates in an after-hours reception that evening at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nunn Business Building, featuring refreshments and guest speaker Sandra Aven, publisher of the Plainview Daily Herald. Aven was named Plainview Woman of the Year in January 2006 for her efforts with the Rainbow Room, the YMCA and Wee Care Child Center, and she took the reins as publisher on Jan. 1, 2006.

The major highlight of the event, however, is the presentation of the first Women’s Entrepreneurial Honors to three local residents, recognizing their accomplishments in local business. This year’s honorees include Evalene McDonald, former owner of Evalene’s Imports; Peggy Wall, co-founder of High Plains Concrete; and Nell Hardage, former president of the American State Bank branch in Plainview.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” said Stephanie Clements, a Wayland junior and president of SIFE. “We wanted something that would spotlight women and give them information on having their own business. There are a lot of challenges out there being a woman and having a business, and we want to encourage women who want to pursue this.”

Students in Free Enterprise, or SIFE, is an international organization with goals to educate citizens both young and old in the aspects of entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business practices and computer literacy.
