schools combine for special concert

April 14, 2010

PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University and Lubbock Christian University performance choirs will combine for a Saturday concert in Wayland’s Harral Memorial Auditorium. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This is the second joint concert for the schools that performed in a similar event two year ago. The group performed on the Lubbock Christian campus Thursday evening. Four choirs will combine to present Mark Hayes’ Te Deum. Wayland commissioned Hayes to compose the piece which premiered on April 22, 2004.

“It will be exciting to perform this work again with four combined choirs from WBU and LCU,” said WBU Director of Choral Activities Dr. Scott Herrington.

Wayland’s International Choir and Wayland Singers will join with LCU’s Praise Choir and Chamber Singers. Each group will perform separately then join together for the presentation of Te Deum. Herrington, who will conduct the 120-voice choir, said this type of collaboration benefits the students of both schools.

“It allows us to access literature we might not otherwise be able to perform,” Herrington said. “Our students don’t often have the opportunity to perform in such a large chorus with full orchestra. It is also great for our music students to interact with the music students from LCU.”

Admission to the event is free of charge and open to the public.
