football players invited to preview days on Wayland campus

January 6, 2011

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University will host a series of Pigskin Preview Days for prospective students with an interest in being part of the school’s inaugural season of football.

Planned for Jan. 22, 29 and Feb. 12, the one-day events will be by invitation of head football Coach Jeff Lynn. The day will include an introduction, program overview and FAQ session with Lynn, campus tours, information sessions on admissions and financial aid, and the opportunity for tryouts. Included in the day are a free lunch and free admission to Wayland’s basketball doubleheaders slated for 1 and 3 p.m. those afternoons for participants.

Aaron Anderson in the dirtLynn, who has already been busy recruiting since being named head coach on Dec. 8, notes that students with an interest in the WBU program should contact him first by email at lynnj@wbu.edu. The intent is to keep the group at manageable numbers where students have a chance to interact with coaches and others during the preview days.

“I’m really excited about where we’re headed and the vision of our football program,” said Lynn. “This will be our first recruiting class and it’s very exciting.”

Many of the same opportunities will be available for prospects during the March 25-26 Big Weekend annual preview event which is open to any students. That two-day event includes a Friday concert, mock classes, late-night activities and auditions for fine arts and athletics scholarships. High school juniors, seniors and prospective transfers spend the night in the dormitories with current students and are immersed in college life for two full days. Parents also have special sessions designed for them, and families can attend sporting events and campus music events.

“Football energizes a campus in a special way and unites people across the community. We believe the notion of pioneering such an effort won’t be lost on committed young men who have football fever, combined with high expectations for their own academic and athletic development. We’re already having so much fun getting to know such prospects,” said Director of Admissions Debbie Stennett.

“They’ll leave the preview days with a good sense of life here at Wayland and the role the university can play in preparing them to lead productive adult lives.”

Wayland will field its first football team in more than 70 years in the fall of 2011, a leadership class that will practice, condition and work at the level of any other collegiate football program with the exception of playing a competitive schedule. The following fall, in 2012, the university will begin competitive play in the Central States Football League of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The special preview days are free to prospective students, who may register their attendance online at www.wbu.edu (click the link for Pigskin Preview Days near the bottom) or by calling the Office of Admissions at (800) 588-1928 once they have received an invitation from Coach Lynn. Parents are welcome to attend the preview days as well.
