Trustees approve new budget, tuition increase for coming year

PLAINVIEW – The Board of Trustees at Wayland Baptist University approved a tuition increase and a $61.5 million budget for the system of 14 campuses during its regular spring meeting held Thursday.

              Tuition for undergraduate courses on the Plainview campus will go from $415 to $435 per credit hour, an increase of 4.8 percent, while graduate tuition will jump $20 per hour to $365, a 3.5 percent hike. Virtual Campus tuition will increase to $307 per hour for undergraduate and $359 for graduate courses, representing a roughly 4.5 percent jump. Summer courses in Plainview will still reflect a roughly 50 percent discount for students at either level of coursework.

              On the 13 external campuses Wayland operates – located in Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and in four other Texas cities – tuition will increase to $231 per credit hour for undergraduate courses and $269 per hour for graduate. Both reflect a rise of just over 4 percent, and the hike reflects the inclusion of a $9 per hour technology fee. The technology fee on the Plainview campus will be rolled into the general fee on a sliding scale based on credit hours of enrollment for the term.

              The School of Nursing tuition raised 3.7 percent to $320 for the current undergraduate courses, while initial tuition for the proposed master’s degree in nursing – which is currently pending approval by Wayland’s accrediting body – will be set at $359 per hour.

              The board approved a new budget of $61,584,088 for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins on July 1, reflecting an 11.9 percent rise above last year’s budget. The new budget includes three new faculty positions, several new staff positions to accommodate student enrollment growth and an assistant football coach.

              In other business, the board approved faculty promotions for 13 individuals, effective July 1, and approved a summer and fall sabbatical for Dr. Otto B. Schacht, dean of the School of Business, in order to develop external recruiting locations for military populations into Wayland’s online programs.

              The board also approved emeritus status for Dr. Mary Maloney, who served as a faculty member on the Phoenix campus from 1993-2009 and whose family foundation developed a faculty award at WBU to recognize academic excellence and leadership, Christian commitment and dedication and positive contributions to the lives of students.

              With an air of excitement as the school held early afternoon groundbreaking ceremonies for the new 350-bed men’s dormitory on the north edge of the campus, the board heard reports of growth in enrollment, athletics, donor support and a mirrored excitement among students and alumni about the pending addition of football on the Plainview campus.
