Music school ads top faculty

PLAINVIEW – The School of Music at Wayland Baptist University has announced the hiring of two new faculty members who will strengthen the university’s choir and band programs.

Dr. Stephen WeberDr. Steven Weber, who has spent the past 24 years as Director of Choral Activities at Amarillo College, has been named Director of Choir and Professor of Choral Education at Wayland. Weber earned his doctorate from Arizona State University in 1992. He also holds master’s degree from ASU as well as The Catholic University of America, and a bachelor’s degree from Lebanon Valley College.

Professionally, Dr. Weber has performed with the Norman Luboff Choir, the United States Singing Sergeants and the Paul Hill Chorale. At Wayland, he will direct choirs, teach choral music education and conducting courses and supervise student teachers.

Carl RowesCarl Rowles has been named Wayland’s new Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Instrumental Education. Rowles is currently serving as the interim director of the Monmouth College Wind Ensemble while completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa. He is on course to complete his degree in May. Rowles holds a master’s degree from Tennessee Technological University and a bachelor’s from Simpson College.

While at the University of Iowa Rowles has conducted the university band and been part of the leadership team for the Hawkeye Marching Band. He has held teaching positions at Tennessee Technological University and New Hampton High School in New Hampton, Iowa.

Professionally, Rowles has served as a conductor, adjudicator and musical theatre conductor. He is an accomplished performer on trumpet and piano, and has designed marching and drill arrangements. At Wayland he will direct the Wayland Wind Ensemble as well as teach instrumental music education and conducting courses. He will also supervise student teachers.
